Some of the best, easiest to store, and longest lasting foods for long-term storage are dry foods. They can be prepared with hot water, and they’re good to go, filling, and not bad tasting, either. Get a 20 lb bag of rice, which can be prepared in a thousand different ways and is pretty neutral when it comes to blending with other flavors. Also get a 20 lb bag of beans. You can get pinto, white, split peas, black kidney, or another type of bean, depending on your budget and palate. Oatmeal is one of those filling, stick-to-your-ribs foods that go a long way and so is pancake mix (although these two might not last quite as long as the rice and beans). You can’t go wrong with pasta, either. Powdered milk can stay good up to 20 years when taken care of sufficiently, and bullion can add flavor for many years to come, too.
Canned and jarred goods can last an incredible amount of time, and offer some great variety. They can be mixed with rice and/or beans for an extra filling meal. Peanut butter is packed with nutrients and is filling (we also recommend stocking up on nuts in bulk). Another protein-packed option is canned meats such as salmon, spam, tuna, and others. They’re great because they can be eaten without cooking, right out of the can. Canned fruits and vegetables are not only nutritious, but they have a high water content, which is great when you don’t have much water stored. Additionally, canned milks, such as condensed milk, coconut milk, and evaporated milk are great for cooking when you don’t have a good water supply.
Nobody wants to think about a life without caffeine, so having large cans of it stockpiled is critical to everyone’s sanity (we kid…but not too much). All kidding aside, caffeine helps amplify mental alertness, energy, and mood. Some teas have the ability to be calming, and others have anti-inflammatory properties and kill bacteria in the water.
Corn is best in two forms: canned and dried. The canned version is a great vegetable that’s filling a nutritious. The dried corn version is excellent for cooking. Use it in place of flour, as a thickening agent, to make grits, and dough. It’s quite versatile!
Every person in your party will need at least a gallon of water a day to survive, especially under harsh conditions. Be sure you have enough for two weeks for each person in your family, as well as any pets you have. Keep a camping stove handy to boil water if it comes to that.
There will eventually come a time when you need to start replenishing your supply. A garden will be necessary, and you’ll want to get going on that right away.
