This explains why at least one in five adults carries protection like pepper spray, firearms, and tasers.
But each of these self-defense weapons can create more problems than they solve.
Firstly, law-abiding folk rarely try to sneak things like pepper spray and firearms past airport security or into other “weapons-free zones”, like public buildings.
Fight training, hand-to-hand combat skills, or being 6'5" and 240lbs+ can replace the need for a weapon in these environments.
But untrained individuals who rely on weapons for protection?
They may routinely find themselves in situations when they’re completely defenseless.
Secondly, the time to retrieve each of these weapons is more than enough for an attacker to gain the upper hand.
While someone fumbles in their bag for pepper spray, a violent mugger could have easily landed the first of many devastating blows.
Finally, pepper spray has an expiration date, and tasers rely on batteries.
And you just know the one time you need to defend yourself, they’ll let you down.
As for firearms?
Ok, there’s no expiration date.
But I’m still not a huge fan of carrying a gun.
Yes, I know there are almost two and a half million registered gun owners in Canada alone…
But how many of them know that, statistically speaking, gun carriers are 5x more likely to be the victims of an altercation?
