How to Be a Prepper - Essential Prepper Skills Every Prepper Should Know

Prepping supplies are essential to being prepared for any situation. However, there are skills you need to posses to increase your chances of survival and success of survival should the worst happen (when SHFT). Here is what you should know.

It’s one thing to be prepared with all the supplies you think you’ll need in the event of an emergency, but it’s quite another to be able to carry out the survival skills it takes to make it through to the other side. Learning these skills list will only augment the supplies you’ve hoarded, putting you at a better stance for the future.

At The Atomic Bear, we carry products that help you survive. Whether you’re preparing for a full-scale disaster or a personal self-defense strategy, our products can help you. Read on for more information about prepper skills every prepper should learn.

Fitness

We’re not talking about getting in a few rounds of your gym’s WOTD sporadically. While that’s all well and good, the fitness you’re going to train for involves running, moving and lifting supplies, manual labor, and potentially fighting. All respect to those who can deadlift their body weight, but when it comes to real-life survival skills, endurance, strength, and speed are critical when SHFT.

Gardening

In the event that grocery stores are unavailable, looted, or there’s no chance of having a place to shop, you’ll need to know how to work the land. Whether that’s cultivating a garden or growing medicinal herbs, or all the horticultural specialties in between, you’ll be covered if you know your climate, water needs, optimal planting placement, and how to fertilize naturally.

Animal Care and Butchering

Running to your local Sam’s Club for a few months’ worth of ground beef might not be in the cards after a calamitous event. Know how to raise and butcher your own meat, and you’ll be at an advantage. Learning to hunt and dress wildlife are also excellent skills.

Water Purification

Learn to filter, purify, and sanitize water, as well as how to store it safely. Remember how great the days of cholera were? Yeah. We don’t want that type of situation on our hands again. You’ll need clean water for drinking, cooking, medical care, and for your livestock, among other things. And considering that a human can only go three days without it, you don’t want to mess around.

Self-Defense

If you’re “sitting pretty” in your shelter with clean water, plenty of food, livestock, and even a generator, you’re going to be a target. Learn to defend yourself, your family, and your property. Personal defense is one thing (and might we recommend our S.W.A.T. Pen, which is a weapon, tactical tool, pen, and glass punch in one?), but when you’ve got a family and property to defend, you’ll need to up your game. Learn to rig alarm and defense systems so that anybody who dares to try to take your land will either think twice or instantly regret their decision.

Bartering

Good negotiating skills are going to come in very handy. The currency you know now might not be around after a disastrous event, which means all that money you’ve stored electronically isn’t going to be worth diddly squat without your working cell phone and laptop. Learn to negotiate with skill so that you can barter your goods for others’. After you’ve worked so hard to create your post-disaster haven, you really don’t want to get taken for a ride by somebody more cunning.
