How to Sharpen a Serrated Knife Blade

Regardless, you need to know how to sharpen your serrated blade correctly to ensure that it lasts a lifetime, and that it does what it’s supposed to do when you need it the most. Make Sure You Have the Right Tools

Just as you wouldn’t fix your car with only a screwdriver, you wouldn't fix a multi-use knife with just a sharpening stone or sharpening rod. Serrated knives can still work while dull because they’re designed like a saw. However, to get the best, most reliable use out of your survival blade, you should pay special attention to the sharpness within the grooves. To do this, you need a serrated knife sharpener, which can get into those grooves. If your military knife has grooves of multiple sizes, you should opt for a serrated knife sharpener kit that includes a few sizes that will fit your blade’s serrations.

Sharpen the Serrations

First, you’re going to need to establish a method to your madness. It helps to work in a pattern and in one direction. So you can start at the hilt and move toward the blade (and with the S.W.A.T. Tactical Blade you’re going to want to use this method), or you can work from tip to hilt. Next, determine your pattern. If your blade has one size of serrations, you’re good—just go in order. If it has two or three sizes, you can determine if you want to do all the small ones, then the large ones, and so on. Go with whatever makes it easier for you to get the job done. Put on some music—you’re going to be at this for a while—and get to work. You’re going to sharpen each curve of the serrated blade on each side of the blade now. Be sure that you’re giving equal attention to each groove, or you’re going to end up with an uneven sharpening job. If you start to get bored or tired, you’re better off stopping rather than rushing through the rest.

Sharpen the Smooth Side of the Blade

You’ve likely created some unevenness on the blade next to the serrations that need to be smoothed out. Now you’re going to use your sharpening stone or rod. Hold the blade and stone securely, and slide the knife in a direction that’s away from you, being very careful not to allow the blade to go near your fingers. Be sure you’re sharpening an edge into the full length of the knife and smoothing away any burrs.
